12 beauty tips to follow before your big day!

Updated: Jan 4, 2021

#12. Get regular facials

Leading up to your big day it's important to have clear hydrated skin. Between stress and a busy schedule, skin can flare up. Regular facials are a great way to keep skin balanced and hydrated. This is also going to help with your makeup application for the big day.

#11. Water and Sleep = Hydration and Rest!

It's not rocket science but make it a priority. Two very key elements for the body and mind and especially for the skin. It's easy to forget about when your schedule is action packed with a never ending "to do" list prior to your wedding day. Sleep will naturally make you look healthy, rested and keep skin looking youthful and rejuvenated. Hydration will keep skin balanced. Hence, allowing your makeup to look as flawless as possible for your wedding day makeup application.

#10. Schedule your makeup Trial Run (Or Two)

It's important to schedule your makeup trial 6 months to a year in advance of your wedding for the following reasons:

To ensure your makeup artist gets you, understands your needs, your makeup goals and most importantly that you both work well together. Sometimes even scheduling a second Trial Run with a different look to try can give you a comparison of what you like best for the big day. Booking in advance allows you and your makeup artist to plan and schedule accordingly without rushing or encountering any last minute mishaps. Makeup trial runs are always best used when you pair it with a special day ie. Same day as your engagement party or wedding shower etc. Thus, allowing you to maximize your trial and keep exceptionally organized ahead of your wedding day.

#9. Setting Spray and Products to Make your Makeup Last

Though it might feel otherwise, your wedding day is a marathon, not a sprint, and you'll want your makeup to hold up through every last photo, dance, toast, and selfie. That makes primer essential. Your makeup artist should use a primer cream and or spray, on your lids and full face, prior to the application and then as a setting spray for final touches. I have had brides come to me with amazement of how their makeup lasted the night simply because we use the proper setting creams, lotions, and sprays before and after the makeup application for the wedding. In fact, I had a bride tell me, incredibly that her makeup didn't move at all after a downpour of rain came down during the middle of their outdoor wedding ceremony. Where most brides would have been devastated, she called the moment "Magical" and had the best photos to prove it. With makeup perfectly intact of course, from yours truly! ;)

#8. Conceal Last Minute Breakouts

Sure it sucks, but sometimes no matter how careful we are, zits happen. And for times when your makeup artist isn't on location (I.e. your dinner rehearsal) Here's what you can do.

To camouflage a zit, tap a slightly tacky concealer right on top of it with a synthetic-bristle brush. Don't sweep it back and forth, as it will build up around the blemish.

A few concealers I love: CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Soft Touch Concealer, Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer, and Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Camouflage Concealer. To give it some staying power, top with "a touch" of translucent powder.

#7. Strive to look like yourself

I always tell my "Brides to Be" to strive to look like yourself. We are all beautiful and it's my job to just naturally enhance your look. Sometimes when Brides venture too far off with their makeup they end up feeling disappointed because its too dramatic from what their use to.

So stick to what your use to, regardless of if that's a soft barley there, no makeup, makeup look or over the top high fashion shadows and lipsticks full face of makeup look.

Your wedding day is not a time to experiment. Stick to what you feel confident with and have fun with your makeup artist with whichever look that may be.

If you want to achieve a timeless fail safe look, I recommend radiant skin, rosy cheeks, flushed lips, and some definition on the eyes. It gives you intensity without looking overdone or needing a ton of eye shadow. Plus, the wide-eyed effect is really dreamy.

#6. False lashes are a great option but not if you are a crier

If you're a big crier, think twice before tacking on false lashes. Use individual semi permanent lashes or just waterproof mascara beefed up with a lash curler to make your day perfect. No matter how talented the makeup artist is, tears will lift the lash adhesive right off. Get semi permanent lashes done ahead of your wedding or just curl your lashes and stick with a volumizing mascara instead, and whether you wear falsies or not, waterproof mascara is a must.

#5. Pack a touch up Kit!

Pack a touch-up kit with the essentials — blush, foundation powder, translucent powder, tissues, and lipstick or lipgloss — and stash it in a bridesmaid's clutch. A pretty lip gloss or lip stick in a shade similar to the lipstick you were wearing at the beginning of the day makes touch-ups quicker and easier.

#4. Schedule your timing appropriately!

Save yourself from any last-minute rushing and tack on a few extra minutes to your prep time. However long you think your makeup will take that day, add 30 minutes. The fear is that you'll be sitting ready, but in my experience, that rarely ever happens.

One compliment I always receive is that I always schedule my bridal party makeup with good timing, a reason of this is because I schedule the bridal party and bride appropriately. Allowing for a little extra time for during and after each makeup application and especially for the bride makes it a special experience and not a rushed one. The last thing you want is to have bridesmaids or MOG, MOB show up late to their time slot for makeup on the the day of the wedding and push back the schedule cutting into the brides time for makeup. You would be surprised how often this happens. I always recommend the bride schedules with me the early bird of the group/most dependable one for makeup first to avoid and pushbacks. So schedule your makeup and hair timing to allow some calm relaxing time prior to, if only for a half hour to enjoy the moment with your bridal party before your photos and ceremony. That day will fly by and you want to take in the moment every second that you can and enjoy it as much as you can.

#3. Eyebrows and Waxing

Make sure you go to someone you trust and have been to 3-6 month (consistently) before your wedding so there are no surprises, they will be use to your skin type by then and you will be used to their waxing or threading, hair removal techniques etc. Waxing the face can irritate the skin with redness and even breakouts (ugh! the worst). I suggest any experimenting with different hair removal techniques far far far in advance of your wedding day. And any facial waxing try to do one to two weeks before the wedding day just in case.

#2. Tanning and Teeth Whitening

Fake and bake should be experimented with 2-3 months ahead of time. Do not try to do it yourself. The best fake tanning sprays and techniques should be left to the professionals to ensure a flawless fake tan. Some brides still go into tanning beds but don't do that to your skin Ladies (and gentlemen) it's terrible for aging and potential skin cancer. When it comes to whitening your smile, the DIY whitening packages work great and can brighten your smile with a week or two. For those of us (including me) who have sensitive teeth, they have specific kits to use and they work great. So start your teeth whitening two weeks ahead of your wedding day and schedule a great spray tan with a professional well ahead of time and go back to the same studio to ensure spray tanning perfection.

#1. Nourish your skin!

Nourish your skin both body and face the evening before your wedding. Using proper hydrating skin creams and appropriate brightening serums for your face (based on your skin type) will illuminate your skin for the most flawless application for your wedding makeup. And again, sleep well, eat well, drink lots of water and make sure to have fun!
